ABSTRACT. This essay analyses several films by the Polish director Agnieszka Holland that are set in border areas or thematize the question of borders, their overcoming or shift in the context of Poland’s complex history. Taking into account what Simon Lewis calls “Border Trouble”, I will also examine the possibilities of responding, through the filmic reflection of the director, to certain tendencies of “border praise”, especially through her latest work, Green Border, which overturns certain dominant assumptions and evaluations in Polish cinema.
